Day 28 - A Book You Wish You’d Never Read: Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy by E. L. James
Before I proceed, let me clarify: it’s not the idea of BDSM that really bothers me about these books. I’ve read erotica before where it features prominently, and while it’s not something I actively look for I have no problems with other people participating in it as long as everyone knows what they’re getting into and everyone’s consenting to it.
But the problem with Fifty Shades of Grey is that this is patently not a consenting BDSM relationship: this is nothing short of an abusive relationship masquerading as erotica - and if there is anything that should not be masquerading as erotica, it’s abusive relationships with a healthy serving of rape. Christian Grey is not sexy: he is a controlling, manipulative son of a bitch who ought to be locked up somewhere in solitary and never, ever let out ever again. He is precisely the kind of man parents tell their children not to get involved with, and having a man like him portrayed as some kind of romantic ideal gives me chills - not for myself, because I like to think I’m not that stupid as to get caught up with that kind of man, but for all the other readers who think this sort of behavior is okay because these books make it look like it is.
I read these once, because of all the hype, but I don’t want to read them ever again. Watching Anastasia destroy herself the way she does in these books is disheartening and scary.
